Beautiful, Inside and Out

Full-figured Bess Simpson despairs — so many men on campus are turned off by "fat chicks." Only one has caught her eye, but he's always with the petite drum major. Bolstered by an encouraging best friend, Bess finds her math ability comes in handy — the man of her dreams needs a tutor.

Art Fuller wants to be a metallurgical engineer, but he must pass the Differential Equations class, and math is not his strong point. To make matters worse, the help session leader is no help, and dating the daughter of the department head isn’t getting him anywhere but henpecked, especially when he turns to Bess for some assistance.

Will Bess impress him beyond the subject at hand? Or is he unable to recognize her true value?

Kaiju Fall

After the fall, the real fight begins. For life, for home, for freedom.

Rylan Scott was a petroleum engineer with a young family. He had a successful wife and two curious boys. But then Kaiju Goliad made landfall near his Clear Lake home. The beast rampaged through the area before it was finally killed, his gargantuan body falling in Rylan’s neighborhood. The problems should have ended with the kaiju's death, but they were just beginning. This is the story of what happens to a city after the kaiju is killed. What happens to the body? Where does the skeleton go? How do you piece back your life after such a cataclysmic event? And then there is the problem of another kaiju in the Gulf. This one is a kui kaiju, a scavenger, and it is headed to Houston…

About Doug Goodman

Hi! My name is Doug Goodman. I live in Houston but I was raised in Lubbock, Texas. I'm an animal writer. It doesn't matter if the animals I write about are zombie-hunting dogs, dinosaurs, or giant kaiju monsters, I'm interested in that area where animals and humans intersect. I'm especially curious about the mind meld that happens with working animals. This is my point of view for examining human nature, and why I enjoy writing these books so much.

My website (dgoodman1.wordpress.com) says I'm a writer and an explorer. My wife and I are "often" travelers. Thanks to my work, I sometimes get the opportunity to visit extraordinary people in out-of-the-way places. In recent years I've explored parts of the Navajo Nation, Michigan's Upper Peninsula, and I did a mesmerizing 20-state roadtrip with my supportive family. I've been to all but four states in the United States.

I live with two awesome kids (though one is having her own adventures in college), one amazing wife, and two white German Shepherds. Thank you for stopping by, and please check out one of my books. (They are all available from Amazon as paperbacks and e-books.) Since mid-2019, I've been donating twenty percent of my proceeds to charity. If you want to see where I donate, I update my donations via my blog.

Lamps of Doom

This cozy Christian mystery set in Scotland is replete with historical touches and bombshell twists.
Texas landscape artist Nicky Randall arrives in Scotland to get the historic stone mansion she inherited from her grandparents ready to sell. Miserable childhood memories of vacation time in Scotland already plague Nic, and when she meets the couple who were supposed to introduce her to her home already leaving, the Scotland trip is off to a wobbly start.
Although Nicky inherited the house and garden, her cousin, Sheena McAlpine, inherited the antique furnishings, including her grandmother’s extensive collection of valuable, historical lamps. When Nicky first sees the lamp collection, the odd phrase, “Lamps of Doom,” pops into her mind. It proves an apt phrase when the lamps start vanishing. Nicky fears that Sheena will blame her. Who else could steal lamps from a locked house?
Already angry and bitter about her broken engagement, Nicky complains over the phone to a friend about the bewildering differences between Scotland and America. Sheena’s friend, Brock, arrives to help in the garden and overhears the negative conversation. “The glass would never be half-empty or half-full to you, would it?” he asks her. “You’re so critical and complaining that you couldn’t even find the glass.”
Nicky hotly resents the stranger’s criticism—until she realizes it is true. Then she decides to replace bitterness with optimism and rebuild her life on a foundation of thankfulness—but surrounded by mystery and danger, that proves a hard choice to execute.
Nicky is attracted to Brock, but attempts to hide that magnetism, because she believes Sheena is in love with him. Even though she and her cousin were never close, she doesn’t want to compete with Sheena for Brock’s love. Besides, she has more urgent concerns than romance. Sheena’s lamps are still disappearing from the locked house; arson destroys the tool shed; she gets trapped in the attic, and she is attacked by an unknown assailant.
When Nicky finds a body in the garden, it brings to light a 12-year-old mystery. Will she be able to solve the cold case with so few clues? She must, because her life and her sanity are in danger. And solving the mystery just might prove to be the open road to Brock’s love.
Stephanie Parker McKean
I’ve survived mauling by an African lion.
I’ve survived being bitten by a water moccasin snake.
I’ve emerged victorious from having been sexually abused as a child. Fleeing that abuse, I lived under a bridge. Now instead of living under a bridge, I use them as titles for my Texas Miz Mike "Bridge" series, humorous mystery-romance-suspense novels.
I’ve learned that what doesn’t make you bitter makes you better. You really can't make lemonade without lemons.
And thank God, I’ve made the transition from atheist to Christian. My two favorite Bible verses are: in everything give thanks; and all things work together to good for those who love the LORD.
I used to think that the worst day in my life was the day I lost my job; my mother died and I couldn’t attend her funeral because my husband was sent home from the hospital to die; our sheepdog died, and my truck caught on fire in downtown San Antonio. Several years later, I learned what a really bad day is. My son, USMC Major Luke Parker died in a plane crash on November 17, 2013. It doesn't get worse than that. "Bridge Beyond Betrayal" is dedicated to Luke.
I’m now married to wonderful Alan McKean, author of historic time travel books. He retired as a Church of Scotland minister after 35 years in the pulpit and we moved to Dunoon, Scotland. But I bet you want to hear more about the lion.
First, I was born in Texas, which was at that time the biggest state in the U.S. I learned at an early age that everything in Texas is bigger and better. When Alaska became a state, I cried. But what about the lion?
Along with an innate pride for Texas, I was born with a love for animals. When I was five, my first pet was a grasshopper that I carried around on a silver spoon. When I accidentally dropped spoon and grasshopper down the radiator in an upstairs apartment building, I sobbed. My mother sobbed too. The spoon had been a wedding gift.
History repeated itself when my five-year-old son’s pet grasshopper was consumed by a small spider. Luke sobbed inconsolably. That experience inspired me to write what is my newest book at the moment, "I'm the Grasshopper." But back to the lion.
My love for animals led to the snake bite. Because I was an unpopular child, I made pets out of snakes. Other girls were afraid of them. Riding a bicycle with a snake around my neck made boys notice me. (They thought I was crazy.) The day after I appeared on a local television show explaining how to tell a poisonous snake from a harmless snake, I was bitten by a cotton mouth. Now, finally—the lion!
Ebenezer arrived in the back of a station wagon to join our family’s roadside zoo, a collection of animals that included opossums, raccoons, assorted harmless snakes, a fox, a large boa constrictor, monkeys, a skunk, and a jaguarundi. The 200-pound pet fit right in with our family, until he reached 400 pounds and became a lion.
Sadly, when I became mature enough to quit riding bicycles with snakes in my quixotic attempt to impress boys, I remained immature enough to use a gimmick like an African lion. I invited a fellow college student home to see Eb. Not realizing that Eb had transformed from pet to lion, I walked up to him. Eb grabbed me by the stomach, threw me to the ground, and mauled me. My terrified college friend jerked me out of the cage—which made Eb bite even harder because he was about to lose his toy. “I hope I did that right,” Ed panted. “I’ve never had to rescue anyone from a lion before!” I never saw Ed again.
And now you know about the lion. And when you read the Texas Miz Mike Christian mystery-romance-suspense novels set in Three Prongs, Texas, where the misfits fit, you’ll know more about Texas.
And hopefully, you’ll learn how to make lemonade out of lemons. Because what doesn’t make you bitter makes you better. With God's help, all you need to add is a little prayer, a little praise...a little sugar.

She searches in all the wrong places--in the clubs, with various men, everywhere except where true unconditional love waits for her. Will she ever learn that what is missing from her life is God? About Pam Funke

I am the proud grand-daughter of a pastor and have had the pleasure of learning about God at an early age. I am a Christian author who enjoys writing various genres in the Christian genre. My love of reading and writing led me to begin writing for the enjoyment of others. I am thankful for the many creative writing classes I had back in elementary school.

Recommendations for "Operation Dark Angel"

This is such an important story at such a relevant time. I am so glad to see this is already published, and I do hope it it getting into the hands of many people. You tell the story very well, and Mariel and Nicolaitanes are well-drawn. I particularly like the way you incorporate "historic" events such as 9/11 to make it feel current and relatable. Excellent work! I wish you every success with it!-Faith Rose

This isn't my usual kind of read. I have to say you have a very interesting premise here and you very cleverly weave fact fictions and Bible passages into the work. You are clearly knowledgeable about the subject matter and have put a lot of work into the writing. -Lenny

You have picked a great subject and has done marvelous things with it. I read the story and it is accurate to the bone. This subject is needed to be heard by everyone. All you describe here is sad but true. You have chosen the Antichrist to be born in Italy and I could not agree with you more. It is not the first book on the subject yet I believe that the more this subject is explored, the better it is for the reading community. I will be eagerly awaiting the completion of the series. -Alexandria

A very exciting start to your book as Mariel hears a voice telling her she is to have a child. She's every right to deny the suggestion...she knows better than anyone that she can't be--she's pure. Mariel meets up with Rosalind who explains that she is to give birth to a son, Nicolaitanes and that she would be her protector until the day of the birth. What Mariel doesn't know, is that she will be discarded following the birth and first feeding of the child.
You've given the reader plenty to hang on to, good description and the question of why and what will happen next. The arrangements for the birth and the killing of Mariel signify that there's a powerful reason for Nicolaitanes to arrive on the scene. The book is written well, good dialogue, scenes that are easily taken in from well balanced description. It creates deep thinking on subjects such as the United World Religions trying to be invoked upon the common people and the reason for the appearance of Nicolaitanes in the first place. There's so much more to come in this book--to provide the answers to many questions. I can see this thriller becoming a top seller and worthy of a purchase. -Neville

From Afar

For centuries, poets have argued that unrequited love is love in its strongest form. From Afar is a timeless tale of Morgan Stanfield's search for love in the far northern city of Saint Petersburg, Russia. Leaving the warm climate of Santa Barbara, he embarks on a four-day odyssey where he encounters a Russian beauty, a prostitute, a wise old babushka, an American chauvinist, intellectuals, the Russian mafia, and the 'face' of love, and comes to know how love from a distance can be more captivating than love close on hand.

Without a diagnosis, she is perceived, by some, to be lazy and complaining. No medical doctor has been able to help, so Suzie takes a giant leap of faith and trusts God to lead her. She moves to Florida to see an alternative medicine doctor that once helped her mother's friend. With no job, she relies on God and her savings while she looks for work. She ends up taking a summer-only job coaching a make-shift swim team with inexperienced swimmers. Although temporary, it will keep her going through the summer while she looks for other opportunities to support herself and pay for her treatments. Suzie meets Matt, the Park and Recreation Director and her new boss. When more than a work relationship begins to develop, Suzie feels she must tell Matt about her illness. Will he stand by her or walk away? Is telling him a risk that Suzie is willing to take?
Gail Pallotta introduces us to a world with options when it comes to taking care of our bodies. She speaks with authority on the subject because she understands it first hand. Gail Pallotta's characters are real and convincing because they come from a place of understanding. Gail's love story is fragile and tender, but with an inner strength that comes from trust and faith in God. Gail Pallotta's story is inspiring and resonates with hope when all hope seems to be gone. A lovely story with well defined and well developed characters, and a story line with factual information that will help, or at least educate, readers."

Rescue At Wiseman's Pond

 Rescue at Wiseman’s Pond
is a tale of a daring rescue by a little boy named Ronnie and his dog, Cutter. A heavy rain storm floods the pond by Ronnie’s house and two baby foxes are stranded in the mud. Ronnie’s friends work together to save the babies. Each character plays a part. Mrs. Barnswallow sounds the alarm. Cutter prods Ronnie to follow him. Fred the Turtle keeps watch by the pond. Working together they all help to save the babies. A kind fireman gives Ronnie advice on what to do next, which results in a big surprise.
Beautiful illustrations and nimble rhymes help to tell the story of how teamwork saved the day.

About Suzanne G. Rogers

Suzanne G. Rogers is a California native, but she changed coastlines and now lives with her husband and son in romantic Savannah, Georgia, on an island populated by deer, exotic birds, turtles, and the occasional gator. She's owned by two Sphynx cats, Houdini and Nikita. Writing blush-free young adult fiction is her passion.

Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?

Since I write a lot of historical fiction, I conduct a lot of Internet searches to make sure the details of what I’m writing is historically accurate. I also check Online Etymology Dictionary to make sure the words I’m using are appropriate to the year and location in which my story is set. I don’t get things 100% all the time but I always give it my best effort!

The genesis of the stories themselves is a bit more complex. Sometimes, I’m inspired by a movie, a book, a dream, or an issue in my own life.

When did you write your first book, and how old were you?

I was in my late thirties when I wrote the first book in the Yden series. I love fantasy and would have enjoyed that book and the series when I was growing up. So, I wrote it!

What do you like to do when you're not writing?

I put off a lot of chores when I’m actively writing, so there’s always something to do around the house. Often, I will go outside to rake leaves and prune trees, to get some fresh air and exercise. Last year, in between books, I refinished floors, painted, and planned my next renovations.

What does your family think of your writing?

My son wishes I would write more fantasy and my husband wishes I would write everything more quickly! I got my husband hooked on historical romance, by the way, and he reads far more than I do.

How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

I’ve written around thirty books, I think. The thirtieth one is at the editor right now and I’m hoping to get it published soon.

Asking me to choose my favorite book is like asking a mother to choose her favorite child! I will say that certain characters, like Kellan in Royal Promenade, Larken Burke in Larken, Wesley Parker in Duke of a Gilded Age, Willoughby Winter in My Fair Guardian, and Heather in Tournament of Chance: Dragon Rebel were a great deal of fun to write.

I like my heroes and heroines to be plucky, brave, creative, tenacious, honorable, and to have a touch of whimsy whenever possible.
