My Interview with Nikki
1. What are some of your favorite
books from when you were a child and did any of these inspire you when writing
your books?
I loved the Chronicles of Narnia by
CS Lewis. I think most of my fantasy inspiration came from those books. The
other series I loved (being a horse freak) were the Black Stallion books,
although oddly enough I haven’t written a book about a horse yet. Better put
that on my list.
2.
What books are you reading right now?
I host a book blog and I’m also
president of Firedrake Books, a MG/YA book publisher, so I read a lot of MG/YA
indie books. Right now, I’m just finishing up “Power’s Out,” second in a YA
trilogy by Rachel Meehan about what happens after climate change really hits
and society falls apart. They’re really great books—but definitely for the
young adult crowd and over, not younger kids.
3.
Which authors have influenced you the most and how?
CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien, because
of the fantasy element. As an adult, I read the Harry Potter books, so JK
Rowling also is a great influence. But
I’ll have to say that writing-wise, Stephen King is my muse. I’m not naturally
a horror type person, but every time I read a book by Stephen King, I think
“this is how I want to write.” His style, more than the subject matter. Stephen
King has also authored a book called “On Writing,” which is my writing Bible.
4.
If you could invite any 5 authors to dinner who would you choose?
Definitely Stephen King! JK
Rowling, Ken Follett. If they were still alive, CS Lewis and Rudyard Kipling.
5.
What is your favorite book of all-time (adult)?
My favorite adult book is probably
Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. It’s a great saga with a bit of mystery to
it, lots of history, and just a fantastic writing style.
Thank you for the interview Nikki and all the best with your tour.
The Buzz
"This was one of the most entertaining reads for the whole family we have found in a long time. The characters are very believable, and I am always a sucker for heroes that have to find their way. The reading is very fluid and easily understood by the little kids when read aloud (sounds silly but anyone trying to do this will tell you it's not as easy a thing to achieve as it sounds) and the kids all seem to enjoy the story. The history is easily accessible even without a lot of research or background knowledge. The kids are very motivated to research and learn more on their own because this story has captured their interest. I already have many home learning lessons in mind using this book and have begun developing them with my kids. I think this is a book that will be found in classrooms very soon! Great job! I'm looking forward to more soon!!!" ~ 5 Star Review, Mariah W., Amazon
"Excellent read in and of itself, and provides excellent, character-building source material for reading to youngsters. The characters are well written and realistic, and the storyline is cleverly written and intelligent." ~ 5 Star Review, Alia K., Amazon
"Fantastic read. I loved the characters in this book so much that I re-read to my 9 year old after finishing it. I highly recommend this book for anyone that likes stories about adventure and believing in yourself." ~ 5 Star Review, Keith, Amazon

Omisogh Nikki - we are book-loving twins! My two favorite series growing up were Chronicles of Narnia and the Black Stallion. I used to take a one hour drive to the "city" for an orthodontist appointment every month and when I was there, I would buy one Black Stallion book every time! Read the whole series that way. :-)
ReplyDeleteAnd, ironically, I'm also a huge Stephen King fan, although admittedly, I've fallen behind in reading his books. The last one I read was 11/22/63 which reminded me of some of his older books - classic King!
I haven't read PIllars of the Earth but my brother tore through that series. I'll have to read that one as well.
Thanks for hosting Nikki in the Four Fiends Blog Tour, Victoria! :-)
I also love C.S. Lewis and J.k. Rowling. It's a pleasure to host you on my blog. :)
