Rodriguez, Lead Pastor Executive Presbyter SoCal/Ag...

“I found myself reading the situations discussed in this book, and having the words jump out at me remembering couples and families I have counseled through these very issues. My Review:
Are you wanting to better your marriage by utilizing Godly principles? Perhaps you have come to the conclusion that basing the quality of your marriage on unpredictable sentiments isn’t working for you or your spouse. If this is you, then this book is what you are looking for. It moves through a systematic building process, enabling couples to apply scriptural-based techniques and concepts to their marriages. Geared to both husband and wife, Eric has jam-packed his book with wisdom filled scriptures that apply to all situations couples face from ‘having lost that loving feeling’, respecting one another, having a healthy sex life, dealing with children and so much more. There are questions to answer and great diagrams to help you relate. After reading it, I have convinced my husband to go through it with me as well. I am looking forward to see how it will enhance our 27+ years of marriage. I recommend this to newlyweds, seasoned marriages, and those who are planning on getting married…also highly recommended to singles preparing themselves for their future spouse they haven’t even met yet. There is something for everyone in this wonderful, God centered read.

Rush Revere and the Presidency

Join Rush Revere on another action-packed journey! Rush and his friends head back in time to the early days of our independent nation to watch the early American presidents George Washington, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson in action!

Hey there, young readers! Rush Revere here. I can’t wait to rush, rush, rush to history with our next adventure: a trip back in time to the first days of our country on its own two legs, free from British rule—

What’s that, Liberty?

Liberty wants me to say on its own four legs.

Anyway, as I was saying—free from British rule and creating a new government for the people, by the people. When one of the time-traveling crew from Manchester Middle School decides to run for student-body president, I take them back to meet our first three presidents and first ladies.

So, join us as we head back to those amazing and important first years, when we got to make all the decisions. Turns out, it’s pretty hard to lead a whole new country! We had to make new rules for America and set the path for the country we would grow up to be. And who better to be our first-ever leader than the general who won the war—George Washington!

He was the father of our country and made some incredible decisions that still affect how we live our lives today! But even so, President Washington knew that he couldn’t stay president forever or we might end up with a king, just like England.

We’ll watch as he makes his tough decision to step down to spend more time with Martha Washington and his adopted grandchildren, Nelly and Wash.

Then we’ll saddle up and ride into the presidency of John Adams, who followed in some very big footsteps with the help of his accomplished wife, Abigail. Then we’ll rush, rush, rush to the year 1803, when Thomas Jefferson continues the mission of creating America by making a risky decision to buy a lot of land from the French in the Louisiana Purchase, which more than doubles our size!

Using advice from the early presidents, first ladies, and a former U.S. congressman, the crew works to defeat an old nemesis. The question is— will it be enough?

What are you waiting for? Bring your curiosity and let’s giddyup!

My Review
Elaina, Tawny, Grace, and Steph along with a dog and a cat embark on a crazy adventure to open a bed and breakfast across country. From Ohio to Portland and finally to Maine, the fiery, middle aged woman chance meet many obstacles that will put their kindred spirits to the test. Getting strung up in a tree with the dog, encountering illness, meeting men along the way, their escapade will have you laughing and tearing. Jan is a mastermind at creating stories that stir the soul. Her characters are witty, humorous, lovable, very real and totally relatable. As I read ‘Merlot in Maine’ I thought of how fun it would be to hang out with these four women. Never a dull moment. Jan’s writing is so smooth and fluid. I was never confused or bored. Every page had something funny, crazy or touching. She must be a great cook as well because the dishes the gals cook are very tantalizing, you may just want to try them yourself. I know I will. Bravo to yet another 5 star read by the talented Jan Romes

The Cat That God Sent

Jake Wilkerson, a disillusioned young pastor who is an expert at hiding his fears, takes on a new assignment at a small rural church in Coudersport, Pennsylvania. It's a far piece from anywhere and full of curiously odd and eccentric people, including Emma Grainger, a single woman and a veterinarian who dismisses all Christians as "those people," and Tassy, a young runaway with a secret. His first day on the job, however, Jake is adopted by Petey - a cat of unknown origins and breed - but of great perception. Petey believes that he is on a mission from God to redeem Jake and bring him and his quirky friends back to the truth.

Jim Kraus

Jim Kraus is a longtime writer and editor who has authored or co-authored more than 20 books, both fiction and nonfiction. His best-selling humor book, Bloopers, Blunders, Jokes, Quips, and Quotes, was published by Tyndale House Publishers, sold more than 40,000 copies and inspired several spin-off books. Jim, and his wife, novelist Terri Kraus, and one son, live in the Chicago area.
Also residing with them is a sweet and gentle miniature schnauzer named Rufus. Coincidently, Rufus is also the name of the dog in Jim's latest book, The Dog That Talked to God. "What a coincidence," Jim said. "What are the odds of that happening?" They also share space with an ill-tempered Siberian cat named Petey.
Jim recently was awarded a Master of Writing Arts degree from DePaul University. "Now, I am able to write more better," Jim said. (Yes, that is supposed to be humorous.)
Passionate about writing, Jim loves to create true-to-life characters. "I tend to be the one at the party that is on the edge of things--observing how folks act and react. Plus, I'm not that crazy about people in general--so it works out fine." (Again, it's supposed to be funny.)
The idea of the last book came from Jim's twice-daily walks with his dog, Rufus. "I tend to think through problems as we walk, and I sometimes, softly, pose questions to the noble dog Rufus. And if he could, he would answer them. I know he wants to. Sometimes I give his answers a voice. And I imagined that most pet-owners do the same thing. The idea of a talking dog didn't seem so far-fetched. And the story grew from there."

The Irish Cowboy

A touching, heartfelt tale of lost love, regret, and personal redemption.

The government wanted his land. He just wanted to be left alone.

Hap Wilkes is a spiritually fractured Montana rancher facing a painful past, an increasingly uncertain future, who now fights with everything left in a broken and failing body to keep the one thing still left to him - his pride.
The Irish Cowboy is a family drama spanning decades from the time of lost love, to a family found, and finally spiritual redemption and the always-present human yearning for love and forgiveness that marks the most personal novel to date from bestselling author D.W. Ulsterman.
If you enjoyed The Longest Ride by Nicholas Sparks, you'll LOVE the Irish Cowboy!

READERS CHEER THE IRISH COWBOY!

  • "The Irish Cowboy is a 10 STAR NOVEL - MY HIGHEST PRAISE! The author has outdone himself!"
  • "A great love story but an even greater story about liberty and freedom. If you worry about the power of the federal government, this is a must-read!
  • An interesting mix of romance, family drama and a war for one man's right to own his own land.
  • "A really great family drama of lost love, a test of faith, and a family finding itself. Prepare to cheer and cry at the same time. I absolutely loved the ending..."
  • "My favorite western romance of the year. Had me up all night laughing, crying and praying for Hap and Shirley to find their love..."

˃˃˃ AN AMAZON FAMILY DRAMA BESTSELLER!

"I've read D.W. Ulsterman's action novels so was a little surprised he came out with a western set in Montana. Well let me just say he did a wonderful job. There's action, romance and more action, and whole lot to say about how messed up our country seems to be these days..."
"The best real-life western romance this year..."
"If you are a fan of Christian-themed westerns with an emphasis on the family, you HAVE to read the Irish Cowboy..."
"A nice little romance that left me cheering for Hap and Shirley and their grandkids..."
"A broken down Montana rancher tries to come to terms with a lost love that he finds out isn't quite so lost after all in this excellent family drama by D.W. Ulsterman..."
"I read The Longest Yard by Nicholas Sparks and that was good. Then I read the Irish Cowboy and as far as romance stories go, the Irish Cowboy was better..."
"Normally I wouldn't touch a western romance with a ten foot pole but because this was a D.W. Ulsterman story I gave it a shot and I'm glad I did. Really lays out the plight of America's ranchers as they face big government that seems to only want to shut them all down..."
"A lovely story that keeps the romance clean and doesn't hit the reader over the head with the Christian themes. I'd call it an almost perfect story..."
"Lucky I had a box of tissue when I read this one. What a beautiful story..."
"Having grown up on a Montana ranch in the 1960s this hit all the right notes. I read a lot of historical romance/family drama books and this was one of the best..."
"As an animal lover this western was just about perfect..."
"Sure is nice to be able to share a story with your kids, and the Irish Cowboy is a western that allows you to do just that..."
"This wasn't just another western for me. In so many ways it felt like my own story. I'm not a failed rancher but I know lost love and the Irish Cowboy brought all those emotions back to me in what was a wonderfully told story..."
"The Irish Cowboy has plenty to say politically and does it in a way that fits perfectly in the cowboy genre..."
"Call it cowboy romance or family drama, or Christian romance, I don't care. I'll just call it a really great story..."

~Victoria Simcox's ~The Shard ~ Book 2 ~ In The Bernovem Chronicles

Victoria Simcox’s fast-paced, intricately woven sequel to The Warble, takes Kristina Kingsly and her schoolmates back to Bernovem … and into a thrilling, often dangerous adventure.
Kristina’s stay at summer horse camp is horrible to say the least, and it’s all because Hester and Davina are there as well, making her life miserable. When Hester’s cruel prank goes terribly wrong, it’s actually what sends the three girls back to the magical land of Bernovem. In Bernovem, Kristina is very excited to see her former friend, Prince Werrien. When he invites her to sail with him on his ship to his homeland Tezerel, putting it simply, Kristina can’t refuse.

5 Star Review
I posted a blog review of a wonderful children's fantasy chapter book entitled The Warble, written by local Seattle author Victoria Simcox. Since then my daughters and I have anxiously awaited the arrival of The Warble's sequel, The Shard. I am happy to announce that the wait is finally over... and it was well worth it!

Being a fan of all things concerning faerie and otherworldly realms, I was pulled into the story of The Shard instantly. What I really love is how the author combines realistic teen issues with fairy tale fantasy. For example, the book's heroine Kristina who is from our world, experiences her first budding romance with a handsome teenage Prince from a fantasy world, all the while dealing with the very real insecurities young teen girls are feeling.

I was so taken with The Shard that I read it almost constantly until I was finished! The author has a delightful writing style that is engaging for all ages, yet not to difficult for children to understand. I truly look forward to the sequel to the Shard - the cliff hanger at the end is intense!

I highly recommend The Shard for all lovers of fantasy chapter books, which I feel that tween and teen girls will especially enjoy and relate to.

The Freebie Fairy

Reunited with her gnome, dwarf, animal, fairy friends … and best of all, Werrien, things seem like they couldn’t get any better for Kristina. But when Werrien becomes fascinated with an unusual seeing stone, the “Shard” Kristina is haunted by a ghostlike old hag. Struggling against suspicion, guilt, illness, and ultimately the one who wants to possess her soul, Kristina will see it’s in her weakest moment that she will encounter more strength than she has ever known.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 8 Up—In this practical and lively self-help title, the author argues that teens have six key decisions to make, and that their choices will make or break their futures. The decisions involve getting a good education, choosing true friends, getting along with parents, dating and sex, avoiding addictions, and establishing a healthy sense of self-worth. Covey provides tips for making and following through on each of these areas and delivers concise sound bites of advice peppered with colorful graphics, cartoons, and movie quotes. He supports his arguments with facts, statistics, and analysis. For example, in urging teens to stay in school and keep up their grades, he provides a chart of lifelong earnings based on the highest degree earned, as well as the money needed for a family. The author briefly addresses problems associated with the choices. For example, regarding school, he gives tips on dealing with stress, time management, learning disabilities, and preparing for college. He is frank in discussing sex and dating myths and the dangers of STDs and teenage pregnancy. This book covers typical self-help territory, but does so in a manner that teens will appreciate. Its downfall is its wide scope and the author's failure to cite most of his sources. However, the volume is not designed to be read straight through, and its quick and easy tips will appeal to most readers.—Jane Cronkhite, Cuyahoga County Public Library, OH

"The Pillar of Light is the first book in a series by Anna Travis... Much like C.S. Lewis' stories about Narnia, the young people find themselves in a world other than their own with a challenge they must face in order to save themselves, but also to destroy the evil forces. Like Lewis, the author of The Pillar of Light parallels parables from the Bible to develop her plot. This is an exciting story for young people, a story about faith, love and the power of friendship as they work together to combat the many forces of evil. - Reviewed by Emily-Jane Hills Orford for Readers' Favorite

 Can we overcome our past?
Katie Parker is about to get a new life—whether she wants one or not. With her mom in prison, and her father AWOL, Katie is sent to live with a squeaky-clean family who could have their own sitcom. She launches a full-scale plan to get sent back to the girls’ home when she finds herself in over her head...and heart. When Katie and her new "wrong crowd" get into significant trouble at school, she finds her punishment is restoring a historic theater with a crazy grandma who goes by the name of Mad Maxine. In the midst of her punishment, Katie uncovers family secrets that run deep, and realizes she's not the only one with a pain-filled past. Katie must decide if she'll continue her own family’s messed up legacy or embrace a new beginning in this place called In Between.

The Ugly Princess: The Legend of the Winnowwood

What would you give up to be beautiful? I don’t mean attractive, or pretty or any other term you could conjure up to describe that thing most women seek to be or most men seek to be with.

I mean staggeringly beautiful, men falling at your feet with hopeless adoration as they gaze upon you dumbfounded. That beautiful. I could become that beautiful if I chose, but only with a steep price. Would you pay the price? Does that call to your heart?

It doesn’t call to mine. Yes, when I look at the girl in the mirror, I see a young woman of average height and slight build. I see her lovely emerald green eyes and I see her coarse, orange hair poking out in all directions like some unnatural haystack.

I see the forty-seven warts that line her face, which accompany one large lump and two small boils. You’d probably think that I would be more than eager to trade for the great gift of beauty because I know some, if not all of you, would call me hideous. But I don’t think of myself as ugly.

I think of myself as powerful, strong and fierce – for I have magical powers – powers that amaze and terrify me at times. And today is the most important day of my life, because today my mother will say the words over me and seal my fate. For I, Olive, am the last of the Winnowwood and this is my story.

Based on the award winning screenplay of the same name, The Ugly Princess will take you on an amazing adventure filled with twists, turns and an ending that will take your breath away because it is also a love story of the most unusual, magical kind.

“In the tradition of The Princess Bride (with somewhat less whimsy) and The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making, Smith’s debut is a fairy tale in a new world…. The twists along this charming road make for an enchanting journey.” -- Kirkus Reviews

READER REVIEWS:

Reading this book was an amazing experience. The story itself was breathtaking. I'll be honest, if you read this book you won't regret it. You'll fall in love with Olive and her friends, and you'll be glad to make their story a part of you. Marisol

This book was absolutely flawless...not one wrong step, and is therefore the first book I am awarding a 5 star rating in the Read4Review program. I absolutely loved the Olive character, her strength and unwavering faith are beautiful traits. Highly recommended read!! Virginie

WOW, just WOW! This book was amazing. For all the ugly talk about Princess Olive, I only saw beauty. Her thoughts, her actions, all that made her, all was truly beautiful.Kitlina

I won this book through Goodreads, and am speechless...Incredible. Awe-Inspiring. Beautiful. and full of Hope and Love. This novel blew me away! Sarah

I have nothing but love for this book!! It was amazing, simply said. I thought the premise was new, original and well thought out. Alexandra

I don't frequently come across books that just blow me away, but The Ugly Princess is one of the few books that did. The fact that this book stresses how talent surpasses beauty makes me love it even more! Long story short, this book is DEFINITELY my new favorite. Helen

I think that it doesn't matter if you are beautiful, ugly, or something in between, at some point every girl has an inner little voice that tells her she might not be good enough. And this story is more than an enchanting fairy tale about a magical ugly princess, it is a tale about finding true beauty within yourself, despite of what others may think. It's a story about what true love really is: seeing someone for their strengths, instead of their faults. I loved it and it brought me to tears. Raquel V
About the Author
Henderson Smith
I grew up as a military brat who traveled the world with my family. We moved 10 times before I was 12. Given that transient lifestyle, I had very few friends and I was quite shy. It always took some time to warm up to new surroundings and by the time I did, we were off to our next assignment. Books became my best friends and I lost myself to them. The wonderful adventures and magical realms of possibility were so appealing to my quiet existence. I really became a fan of fairy tales; I think most little girls do. It’s fun to think of yourself as having magical powers and living a magical life. As time went on, however, I became a bit disillusioned with fairy tales as all of the princesses who were the stars of the story were beautiful. I was not beautiful. Did that mean I was not entitled to have these amazing adventures because I did not have the right face? It always troubled me. As an adult, I finally wrote the fairy tale that I wanted to see: a magical princess who was brave and kind and amazing and smart, but not beautiful. In fact, she is rather ugly. But this ugly princess is the most amazing heroine and the one I had always wanted to read about. Now, you can. I hope you love the amazing Olive and the bravest princess whose heart is far more beautiful than anyone else’s face.

Colonization~ spotlight~

Finding a new home has never been so dangerous. Andromeda has spent all seventeen years of her life aboard a deep space transport vessel destined for a paradise planet. Her safe cocoon is about to break open as Paradise 21 looms only one month away, and she must take the aptitude tests to determine her role on the new world and her computer assigned lifemate. As a great-granddaughter of the Commander of the ship, she wants to live up to her family name. But, her forbidden love for her childhood friend, Sirius, distracts her and she fails the tests. The results place her in a menial role in the new colony and pair her with Corvus, the oaf? But when Andromeda steps foot on Paradise 21, her predestined future is the least of her worries. Alien ghosts from a failed colonization warn her of a deadly threat to her colony. And when Sirius's ship crashes on the far ridge in an attempt to investigate, she journeys to rescue him with Corvus. Andromeda now must convince the authorities of the imminent danger to protect her new home. What she didn't expect was a battle of her own feelings for Sirius and Corvus. Can she save the colony and discover her true love?

Get Swept Away to Other Worlds...

My thoughts:
The New Dawn is a space ship, vast as a large city. It has been home to Andromeda (the protagonist), her family, and her colony for many generations; however this all changes when it lands on the long anticipated planet called Paradise 21.
The new world, Paradise 21, is breathtaking, but with deadly infectious plant life that could potentially infect an entire colony. Andromeda works against the clock to save her colony from being wiped out. Along her journey she will encounter all kinds of strange and unusual things and situations; even communicating with a ghost of a person she once knew as well as alien ghosts.
I am a sucker for teen romance and Aubrie did a fantastic job on incorporating this into the story. First I fell for Sirius and hoped that Andromeda and he would be able to break the ridged rules of being matched for marriage to someone other than each other. But then, as the story continued, I really began to like Corvus. His strength of character, sweet personality, loyalty and good looks were hard to resist. Soon I found myself rooting for him instead of Sirius. Even so, I am hoping that Aubrie will bring Sirius back into the story for some good ole romantic rivalry with Corvus.
This book was so much fun to read and I recommend it to teens, tweens, and adults. I am looking forward to see what will happen in book 2, Reconnaissance.
